Nail-plate fixation for trochanteric fractures.

چکیده
Case 2-Woman aged thirty-three. Sanatorium treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis in 1944, with thoracoplasty five years later. Onset of ankylosing spondylitis in 1953, with marked rigid cervical kyphosis. The vital capacity was only 880 cubic centimetres. The deformity was so severe that atlanto-axial dislocation seemed imminent. Operation was undertaken at C.3-4 level with correction as shown (Figs. I and 2). Three weeks later she collapsed and died from heart failure. Necropsy showed that the osteotomy had caused no nerve root or spinal cord injury and that death was the result of her general debility. Yours truly, W. ALEXANDER LAW.

Treatment of Unstable Trochanteric Femur Fractures: Proximal Femur Nail Versus Proximal Femur Locking Compression Plate.
Unstable trochanteric femur fractures are common fractures that are difficult to manage. We conducted a prospective study to compare functional outcomes and complications of 2 different implant designs, proximal femur nail (PFN) and proximal femur locking compression plate (PFLCP), used in internal fixation of unstable trochanteric femur fractures. On hospital admission, 48 patients with unstab...
متن کاملComparison of nail-plate fixation and Ender's nailing for intertrochanteric fractures.
Two comparable groups of patients with fractures of the trochanteric region of the femur were studied. One hundred and sixty-five fractures had been fixed with conventional nail-plates and 132 with Ender's nails. Ender's nails gave superior results in the treatment of trochanteric fractures. The operation was quicker and less traumatic than that using conventional nail-plates and both the morta...
متن کاملGamma and other cephalocondylic intramedullary nails versus extramedullary implants for extracapsular hip fractures in adults.
BACKGROUND Two types of implants used for the surgical fixation of extracapsular hip fractures are cephalocondylic intramedullary nails, which are inserted into the femoral canal proximally to distally across the fracture, and extramedullary implants (e.g. the sliding hip screw). OBJECTIVES To compare cephalocondylic intramedullary nails with extramedullary implants for extracapsular hip frac...
متن کاملCT evaluation of torsional malalignment after intertrochanteric fracture fixation.
INTRODUCTION Trochanteric fractures are commonly stabilized either by intramedullary nailing or plate and screw fixation after reduction on the orthopaedic surgical table under radiological guidance. HYPOTHESIS Closed trochanteric fracture anatomic reduction is difficult in the transversal plane. OBJECTIVES The objective of this prospective study was to assess the rotational malalignment in...
متن کاملThe standard Gamma nail or the Medoff sliding plate for unstable trochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures. A randomised, controlled trial.
We studied 217 patients with an unstable trochanteric or subtrochanteric fracture who had been randomly allocated to treatment by either internal fixation with a standard Gamma nail (SGN) or a Medoff sliding plate (MSP, biaxial dynamisation mode). Their mean age was 84 years (65 to 99) and they were reviewed at four and 12 months after surgery. Assessments of outcome included general complicati...
متن کاملProximal Femoral Nail versus Dynamic Hip Screw Fixation for Trochanteric Fractures: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
BACKGROUND The purpose of this meta-analysis was to find out whether the proximal femoral nail was better than the dynamic hip screw in the treatment of trochanteric fractures with respect to operation time, blood transfusion, hospital stay, wound complications, number of reoperation, and mortality rate. METHODS All randomized controlled trials comparing proximal femoral nail and dynamic hip ...
